Dünyaca ünlü piyanist ve besteci Fazıl Say, 50. İstanbul Müzik Festivali'nde yer aldı. Atatürk Kültür Merkezi Türk Telekom Opera Salonu’nda gerçekleştirilen ve çok sayıda sanatseverin katıldığı konserde Say, Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı'nın da aralarında olduğu ve yaşamında iz bırakan sekiz Türk aydınına ithaf ettiği “Portreler” eserini ilk kez seslendirdi. Dinleyicilerden büyük beğeni alan konser, dakikalarca ayakta alkışlandı. Say, Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı için yazdığı bölümün el yazması notalarını, İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı (İKSV) Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Bülent Eczacıbaşı’na hediye etti.
The world-renowned pianist and composer Fazıl Say was part of the 50th Istanbul Music Festival. He gave a concert at Atatürk Cultural Center Turk Telekom Opera Hall and performed for the first time his work “Portraits” dedicated to eight Turkish intellectuals, including Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, who have deeply influenced him throughout his life. The audience was captivated by the performance and gave a standing ovation for several minutes. Say presented the handwritten score of the part dedicated to Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı to Istanbul Culture and Arts Foundation (İKSV) Chairperson Bülent Eczacıbaşı.
İlk olarak 1973 yılında İstanbul Festivali adıyla düzenlenen ve 1994’te şimdiki adını alan İstanbul Müzik Festivali, 50 yıldır dünya çapında sanatçıları ağırlamaya devam ediyor. Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı tarafından, ülkenin kültür-sanat ekosisteminin gelişimine katkıda bulunmak amacıyla başlatılan ve zamanla dünyanın en prestijli sanat etkinlikleri arasında yerini alan İstanbul Müzik Festivali, bu yıl da birbirinden değerli sanatçıların bulunduğu programla müzikseverlerin karşısına çıktı.
Yarım asırdır şehre klasik müziğin canlılığını ve zenginliğini armağan eden İstanbul Müzik Festivali’nin bu yılki yıldız sanatçılarından biri de Fazıl Say oldu. Konsere, şef Can Okan yönetimindeki Bilkent Senfoni Orkestrası eşliğinde, Robert Schumann’ın La Minör Piyano Konçertosu ile başlayan Say, ardından, piyano ve flüt için bestelediği Portreler “Op.101” eserinden babası Ahmet Say’a adadığı bölümü seslendirdi. Say, aynı eserin Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı’na adadığı bölümünü ise festival kapsamındaki bu konserde ilk kez seslendirdi.
Portreler eseri, Ahmet Say ve Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı’nın yanı sıra sanatçının yaşamında iz bırakan, Türkiye’de kültür ve sanat hayatına yön vermiş ya da katkı sağlamış Fikret Otyam, Yıldız Kenter, Yaşar Kemal, Şarık Tara, Türkân Saylan ve Tarık Akan gibi sekiz değerli ismin portresinden oluşuyor.
First organized under the name of Istanbul Festival in 1973, and re-named in 1994, Istanbul Music Festival has been hosting world renowned performers and musicians for 50 years. Established by Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı to contribute to the culture and arts ecosystem in Turkey, Istanbul Music Festival has become one of the world’s most prestigious cultural events. This year the festival once again greets music lovers with a program of remarkable performances by the world’s celebrated artists.
After half a century of presenting the city with the richness and vigor of classical music, Istanbul Music Festival hosted this year another star parade including the world-famous composer and pianist Fazıl Say. The concert opened with Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A Minor with Say on the piano accompanied by the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra conducted by Can Okan. Say then performed two parts from his new piece Portraits “Op. 101” for piano and flute: the part dedicated to his father Ahmet Say, followed by the part dedicated to Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, which he performed for the first time in this concert.
Fazıl Say’s new piece comprises eight Portraits dedicated to treasured intellectuals who have deeply influenced the artist and are known for their remarkable contributions to the culture and arts in Turkey. Alongside the portraits of Ahmet Say and Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, there are portraits of Fikret Otyam, Yıldız Kenter, Yaşar Kemal, Şarık Tara, Türkân Saylan and Tarık Akan.

İstanbul Müzik Festivali kapsamında verdiği unutulmaz konser öncesinde sorularımızı yanıtlayan Fazıl Say, Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı’nın sanata katkılarının yanı sıra kendi annesinin de aralarında olduğu, Türkiye’deki birçok eczacının hocası olduğunun da unutulmaması gerektiğini söyledi. Eserle ilgili düşüncelerini Fazıl Say’dan dinledik.
Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı portresini bestelerken çıkış noktanız neydi?
Portreler, hepimiz için anlam ve önem ifade eden sekiz şahsın ismine bestelenmiş parçalar. Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı da bu isimler arasında yer alıyor. Bu besteler, kişileri anlatıyor, onları müzik ile betimlemeye çalışıyor. Müziğin dili ile insanın karakterinde bir bütünlük yaratmaya çalışıyor.
Nejat Bey’in kurduğu İstanbul Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı 50. yaşını kutluyor. Hepimiz İKSV bünyesindeki bu festivalden o kadar çok beslendik ki… Sanatçılar olarak müteşekkiriz. İKSV’nin sanatçılara bir hediyesi bu ama biz sanatçıların da bu yapıyı kuranlara hediyesi olması lazım. Benim verebileceğim en güzel hediyenin, yazacağım bir beste olacağını düşündüm. Bu, bir kişinin ya da kurumun siparişi üzerine yapılmış bir eser değil. Tamamen benim hislerimden doğmuş bir şey.
Bugün ilk kez Atatürk Kültür Merkezi’nde çalacağız Nejat Bey’in parçasını. Burada şunu da belirtmek istiyorum: Kendisinin sanata katkıları çok büyük ama unutmamız gereken bir konu daha var. Nejat Bey aynı zamanda Türkiye’deki birçok eczacının da hocasıydı. Benim annem de bir eczacıydı ve onun öğrencisiydi. Annem, Nejat Bey’e olan hayranlığını ve ondan ne kadar çok şey öğrendiğini hep anlatırdı.
Bize biraz da eseri anlatabilir misiniz?
Biz besteciler bir insanı müziğimizle anlatmaya çalışırken birçok perspektiften yaklaşıyoruz. O kişinin nasıl müzikler sevdiği bile bir etken olabiliyor. Nejat Bey’in klasik müziğe, Batı müziğine olan hayranlığını biliyoruz. Bunun yanı sıra her zaman caza, Türk ritimlerine de açık bir insan olmuştur. Tüm bu öğelere yer vermeye çalıştım. Nejat Bey’in bestesi, ritim ve melodiyi bütünleştiren bir eser.
Fazıl Say answered a few of our questions before his unforgettable concert at the Istanbul Music Festival. Say noted that it was important to remember Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı not only for his contributions to the arts but also as the mentor of a great many pharmacists in Turkey including his own mother. He also shared his thoughts about his new work.
What was your main source of inspiration in composing Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı’s portrait?
“Portraits” are compositions dedicated to eight individuals who mean a great deal to all of us. Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı is one of these individuals. These compositions depict these figures through music. They try to integrate the language of music with the individual characters.
Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, which was founded by Nejat Bey, is celebrating its 50thyear. All of us have been so nourished by this festival organized by İKSV… Speaking here on behalf of all artists, I want to express our gratitude. This is İKSV’s gift to the artists, and I felt that in return we must also present a gift. I figured that the best gift from me would be an original composition. So, it is not a work commissioned by a person or an organization. It was born entirely out of my own world of emotions.
Today, we’ll be playing Nejat Bey’s piece for the first time at Atatürk Cultural Center. Let me also note here: He obviously made outstanding contributions to the arts but there is one more thing he should be remembered with. Nejat Bey was also the mentor of a great many pharmacists in Turkey. My mother was a pharmacist and a mentee of his. She always spoke of her admiration for Nejat Bey and how much she had learned from him.
Could you tell us a little bit about the new piece?
As composers, when we want to depict a person with our music, we approach the subject from multiple perspectives. Even the person’s favorite music can be a factor in it. We know of Nejat Bey’s admiration for Western classical music. But besides that, he was also open to jazz and Turkish rhythms. So I tried to incorporate all those elements. The composition for Nejat Bey is a work that unifies rhythm and melody.
